On September 14th, in St. Peter’s Basilica, a historic celebration took place in honor of the 500th anniversary of the Order of Clerics Regular Theatines, presided over by Pope Francis. Among the attendees was Dom Gorgônio Alves da Encarnação Neto, bishop of Itapetininga and the only bishop of the Teatine Order, who shared his joy for this significant event.
Message from Pope Francis
During the ceremony, Pope Francis addressed fundamental themes: reform, communion, and service, drawing inspiration from the figure of St. Cajetan. Dom Gorgônio emphasized the importance of these points, noting that the Church must be in constant renewal and evolution. “He who desires to reform must first reform himself,” the bishop quoted, underscoring a call for self-criticism and personal growth within the ecclesial community.
The Pope also spoke about the need to foster fraternity among religious and the people. “Our people need much acceptance, affection, and tenderness,” Dom Gorgônio highlighted, reflecting the mission of the Order to be a beacon of hope and love.
The Cross of Christ and the Legacy of the Order
In this meeting, the Pope recalled the Order’s connection to the Cross of Christ, emphasizing the sacrifice and dedication that characterize the Christian life. Dom Gorgônio pointed out that “embracing the cross is making life a gift of love and service,” reaffirming the Order’s commitment to the needy.
Reflecting on the 500 years of history, the bishop mentioned the importance of not only living off the legacy of the past but also facing current challenges. He recalled how, in 1910, St. Pius X helped the Order to be reborn, and how, after the Second Vatican Council, the Order’s constitutions were renewed to meet the needs of the modern Church.
A Call to Trust and Service
Dom Gorgônio concluded his remarks by reaffirming the central message of St. Cajetan: trust in Divine Providence and the commitment to serve with love. “We must seek, first of all, the Kingdom of God and His righteousness,” he stated, emphasizing the relevance of the Order’s mission today.
This meeting with Pope Francis not only celebrated the 500-year legacy of the Order of Theatines but also renewed the call to continue this work with faith, love, and determination.
