Review of the 102nd Assembly of the Union of Superiors General (USG)

Sacrofano, Rome – November 20-22, 2024

The 102nd Assembly of the Union of Superiors General (USG), held in Sacrofano, Rome, from November 20 to 22, 2024, brought together leaders of religious congregations from around the world in an atmosphere of deep spirituality, theological reflection, and ecclesial communion. This gathering, themed “Unity in Diversity: Consecrated Life as a Witness of Trinitarian Love”, was marked by moments of prayer, dialogue, and discernment in the light of the recent Synod of Bishops.

Among the participants, our Superior General, Rev. Fr. Salvador Rodea González, C.R., stood out for his contribution to the fraternal dialogue on the role of consecrated life in building harmonious and authentic relationships within the Church.

Key Topics Addressed

  1. Relationship between bishops and consecrated persons: The assembly emphasized the need to strengthen ties between episcopal conferences and conferences of major superiors, as well as with new forms of consecrated life and ecclesial movements. These relationships were seen as expressions of the harmony in diversity that characterizes the Church.
  2. The Trinity as a model for human relationships: Inspired by the Holy Trinity, participants reflected on how relationships within religious communities and with society should reflect love, mercy, and unity in diversity. Christian anthropology, grounded in Trinitarian love, was highlighted as the foundation for just and compassionate coexistence.
  3. Conversion in fraternal relationships: The need for renewal in religious communities was emphasized, promoting greater openness and authenticity in interpersonal relationships, following the model of Christ’s humility and love, especially in His paschal mystery.

Central Message

Cardinal João Braz de Aviz, Prefect of the Dicastery for Consecrated Life, delivered a key meditation on the role of Trinitarian love as the foundation of the identity and mission of consecrated life. He highlighted that the Church is called to reclaim the relational dimension of love in all its forms: with God, among consecrated persons, with the laity, and with creation. This anthropological and theological approach underscores that love is the path to true human freedom and happiness.

Conclusion

The Assembly concluded with a call for religious communities to be living witnesses of God’s love amidst the world’s divisions, promoting peace and unity through the richness of their charisms. The experience was described by participants as “a sign of the living presence of the Holy Spirit in the Church.”

This gathering reaffirms the commitment of consecrated life to its mission of reflecting Trinitarian love and building bridges of communion in diversity, bringing hope and light to all humanity.
