Within the context of the fifth centenary of the foundation of the Clerics Regular Theatines (1524–2024), the commemorative edition Pastoral Works of Saint Joseph Mary Tomasi is presented as Cuadernos Phase 289, published by the Centre de Pastoral Litúrgica de Barcelona.

The work has been prepared by Rev. Fr. Juan Roberto Orqueida Guaglianone, C.R., Prefect of the Library and General Archive of the Theatine Order, who offers a carefully prepared edition and introductory study that sheds light on a lesser-known — yet deeply significant — dimension of the figure of San José María Tomasi.

Rediscovering the “Prince of Liturgists”

Known as the “Prince of Liturgists,” a title attributed to him by Benedict XIV, Saint Joseph Mary Tomasi stands out in the history of the liturgy as an editor of ancient liturgical sources of great importance. His scholarship contributed decisively to the knowledge and recovery of the Church’s liturgical heritage.

However, the works presented here demonstrate his zeal and pastoral activity in the liturgical formation of the laity within the framework of the post-Tridentine Catholic Reform. Far from limiting himself to the academic sphere, Tomasi showed deep concern for bringing the richness of the Church’s prayer closer to the Christian people.

Contents of the volume

The volume gathers and studies texts of marked pastoral character, among them:

  • On the Private Breviary of Ecclesiastical Offices Outside Choir

  • Brief Synthesis of the Psalms

  • Aspirations and Ejaculatory Prayers Drawn from the Divine Book of Psalms

  • The Breviary of the Psalter Begins

These works reveal his commitment to fostering a more conscious and fruitful participation in the liturgy, promoting access of the laity to the prayer of the Divine Office and to the spiritual treasure of the Psalms.

A contribution to the Theatine charism

The publication is part of the grateful remembrance of the fifth centenary of the Order, highlighting how the Theatine charism — centered on the renewal of the clergy and ecclesial life — finds in Saint Joseph Mary Tomasi a luminous expression: scholarly rigor, fidelity to tradition, and authentic pastoral spirit at the service of the People of God.

This edition not only recovers texts of great historical value, but also offers a timely invitation to rediscover the centrality of the liturgy in Christian life.
