Depois de se formar na Universidade de Bolonha, exerceu a advocacia em N\u00e1poles com retid\u00e3o exemplar. Foi Conselheiro Real do Estado. Chamado por Deus \u00e0 maior perfei\u00e7\u00e3o, em 1557 ingressou nos Teatinos de N\u00e1poles. Seu mestre de noviciado foi o Beato Giovanni Marinoni e seu companheiro Santo Andr\u00e9 Avellino. Professou em 2 de fevereiro de 1558, ano em que foi ordenado sacerdote. Em 1564 foi enviado a Madrid como embaixador da cidade de N\u00e1poles. Tendo recusado os Bispados de Castellamare, Crotone e Brindisi, S\u00e3o Pio V em 1568 obrigou-o a aceitar o Bispado de Piacenza e em 1570 o criou Cardeal. P\u00e1roco muito zeloso, amigo de S\u00e3o Carlos Borromeu, cuidou de todos os aspectos da vida religiosa e social do clero e do povo, promovendo a forma\u00e7\u00e3o do clero, a catequese, a frequ\u00eancia dos sacramentos e a ajuda para o pobre. Em 1576, Greg\u00f3rio XIII, j\u00e1 seu mestre em Bolonha, transferiu-o para a Arquidiocese de N\u00e1poles, onde continuou a reforma eclesi\u00e1stica j\u00e1 experimentada em Piacenza. Morreu em Torre del Greco, onde esteve por um breve per\u00edodo, em 17 de junho de 1578. Foi beatificado por Clemente XIV em 17 de maio de 1772. Seu corpo repousa na Bas\u00edlica de San Paolo Maggiore, em N\u00e1poles.
